Seiko Epson Licenses Fergason IP to Improve Video Imaging

MENLO PARK CA, June 1, 2005. Fergason Patent Properties (FPP) announced the completion of a licensing agreement with Seiko Epson Corporation under which Fergason has licensed certain rights related to U.S. patents 5,717,422 and 6,816,141 and related IP. The technology, called SSBC™ or System Synchronized Brightness Control by FPP, uses the synchronous modulation of a projection lamp and other system parameters and can be used to improve the dynamic range and contrast of presentation front projectors and projection televisions.

“We are proud that Epson, the world leader in 3LCD projection, has decided to enhance the performance of its products with the SSBC IP,” says Dr. James Fergason, the inventor and chairman of FPP.

Fergason has previously announced that Matsushita Electric Industries and LG.Philips LCD had licensed the SSBC technology. Panasonic LCD TVs and home projectors are widely available with the SSBC feature, called AI by Panasonic in flat panels and “Dynamic Iris” in projectors. LG.Philips LCD has added the feature to its line of AMLCD TV modules.

“There is now wide acceptance among LCD and projection technologists that SSBC can dramatically improve video performance”, reports Chuck McLaughlin, VP Licensing for FPP. “Various developers refer to the synchronous modulation of lamp or backlight brightness and image gamma by different names. Common marketing descriptors include dynamic or adaptive and are used to describe contrast, brightness, and range.”

Fergason Patent Properties continues to expand its SSBC IP portfolio around the world and welcomes inquiries regarding licensing. For more information, see www.fergasonpatents.com or contact Chuck McLaughlin, 650.323.7155, chuck@mcgweb.com.
